about

The Best Part
Written, arranged & produced by Wayne & Carla

Wayne: I spent a few years doing more writing on piano, as opposed to the guitar. I am
a rather mediocre piano player, but I am proud of this composition. In typical GRAIN
fashion, we made the recording process as difficult as possible. The initial tracks were
recorded quickly in the first or second takes, but the guitars and the solo section were
a bitch. First there was a guitar solo and then a piano solo, and then a slide solo, but
nothing seemed right. One day, my friend Mark Miller came over and played me some
of his newest recordings with strings, and it really inspired me. Mark is never short
on ideas and has always been quick to lend me a helping hand over the years -- thanks
again buddy! Great job by Al on the pedal steel - I really love the mix of pedal steel with
strings. I decided to take up the instrument shortly thereafter.

Carla: The feel of this song has changed over the years. My original concept was much

more raw and guitar driven, but after much experimenting, we decided on the strings and
pedal steel. Special thanks to Mark Miller for his thoughts and ideas that gave this song
a new attitude. And to Al, for helping us with finishing touches and rounding out our
vision.

lyrics

Lyrics for "The Best Part

What do you see when you look at me
Do you notice the curve of my back
The length of my arms- the width of my eyes
Did you notice the dim of my smile?

What do you get when you watch me move?
Do you think about someone you know?
Do you feel foolish all by yourself
Then you go home and you tell lies

CHORUS:
Pretty girls don’t all go to hell
But some believe all the liars
Some find out who they really are
They solve the puzzle and escape the fire

If I seem nervous it’s because you stare
Your generosity means a lot
Your lack of emotion and meaningless words
I’ll try harder for you

I’m all fingernails hot red
And I thought I was numb to your greed
But your stare turns me cold inside
And I wish I were somebody good

I’ve seen your shopping list of skin and bones)
Have all the flesh you want - it turns bitter in your mouth
Poor thing, you’ve spit out the best part

What do you see when you look at me
You only see carbon and fog
Your wishes live on my fingertips
And the price tag around my neck
