My Mind’s Awake
Written, arranged & produced by Wayne & Carla
Wayne: One of the first GRAIN "epics", as we like to call them. This was definitely
the track that made us want to start recording a new record. Of course, we didn't realize
that it would take so long to complete! I really wanted to hear more of Matt’s reckless
abandon approach to the drums that he tends to do live, but never in the studio. He also
never likes to practice. Somehow I convinced him to practice, just this once & we spent
about 2 hours pounding out this arrangement in his parent’s basement, a day before the
session. I am sure our influences on this one are quit obvious!
Carla: I was reading some C.S. Lewis and then Wayne had this music and then this
happened. I wrote this still under the influence of grief, sadness, and unwelcome change.
But, then I realized that turning the unwelcome into something deliberate makes finding
grace all the more rewarding. When we originally wrote this, I had the idea to do a
harmony vocal part that doubled and tripled progressively as the momentum grew on the
pre-chorus parts. Thanks to Walter for helping me achieve that and create an effect that
doesn’t necessarily sound like vocals, unless you listen closely.
lyrics
Lyrics: "My Mind's Awake' - GRAIN
Hot metal melt my eyes
Hot spirit with no where to roam
Did you drain my heart or did I spill it myself?
Did night fall early or did love shade my eyes?
My mind’s awake – 2x
And all the girls don’t have to smile
And wind doesn’t have to knock out the lights
And watery eyes don’t have to let go
And hungry mouths don’t have to say no
My mind’s awake – 2x
No longer mystified
Now I can finally shine
You may never notice
But I have never been so bright
The waters deep
Jump in and breathe
My minds awake
My minds awake
And skin doesn’t have to let go of the dirt
And rain doesn’t have to loosen the earth
And watery eyes don’t have to let go
And hungry mouths don’t have to say no
My mind’s awake – 4x
No longer mystified
Now I can finally shine
You may never notice
But I have never been so bright
I changed my mind
And now I find
My minds awake
My minds awake
